Last month President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni deployed, dropped, redeployed and transferred ambassadors to different countries of the world.
Among those newly appointed is former Uganda People’s Congress (UPC) Kole woman legislator Ruth Achieng.
Her appointment comes after Parliament rejected to approve her as state minister for fisheries.
Assigning her a ministerial post was perceived as a reward after agreeing to collaborate with ruling party during presidential campaigns. She mobilised for Museveni during elections across the country.
Because she had overstepped the rules of the party constitution, Achieng didn’t bother to contest for Kole woman seat again.
Part of the agreement was Achieng would be rewarded with a juicy job if Museveni successfully won elections.
Museveni honoured his promise and appointed her as minister. To her dismay the NRM chief whip Ruth Nankabirwa wrote to speaker of parliament informing her how the party caucus had resolved to rebuff her assignment.
It however remains illogical how NRM as a party declined to sanction Achieng’s appointment but approved Hon Betty Among as Minister of Lands when both are affiliated to opposition.
Political Ordeal
While her hopes of becoming a minister were shattered, Ruth Achieng became cash strapped since she had moved into a lavish apartment in Naalya an upscale suburb of Kampala.
“After striking a deal with Museveni, she shifted from her basic house to an apartment in Naalya were she was paying over shs 2m a month,” Achieng’s relative told TrumpetNews.
The rent arrears accumulated to a tune of over shs 20m. She paid half of the money and failed to clear shs 7m as balance prompting the landlord to evict her.
Achieng then shifted to a rental in the neighbourhood where he was paying shs 400,000 until her appointment as Ambassador to Ottawa, Canada. The new Ambassador is now in dire straits as she waits to board the next flight to her deployment area.
