Uganda will on Tuesday, February 7 join the rest of the world to celebrate the Safer Internet Day, Chimp Corps report.

Safer Internet Day 2017 will be celebrated globally with the slogan ‘Be the change: Unite for a better internet’.

The celebration sees hundreds of organisations get involved to help promote the safe, responsible and positive use of digital technology for children and young people.

The Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) Executive Director Godfrey Mutabazi said internet should be used for communication and development purposes.

“Today, we look at ICT, especially the internet, as an enabler to socio-economic development,” said Mutabazi.

“Despite its advantages, technology has also brought with it some challenges of its own.”

He said raising children “in a morally upright way is shared responsibility by parents, institutions and government,” adding, “This is in line with the African saying that it takes a village to raise a child.’”

Uganda is among the 10 leading internet markets in Africa with a subscriber base of 8.5 million and that of internet users at 16.7 million, according to UCC statistics.

The total bandwidth-data transfer rate – is 45,039 Mbps.

Mutabazi said UCC has so far established ICT laboratories in over 1,000 government-aided secondary schools.

Of these, 600 schools are connected to the internet.
