Tension: UPDF deploys in Rwenzori over Kirumira Mutima rebel group

Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF) has deployed in Rwenzori mountains after reports that Obusinga Bwa Rwenzururu youth ‘combatants’ (Kirumira Mutima) are reorganising to cause another insurgency.

Security report indicates that this militia group has camped in the hilly sub county of Katwebwa.

Late last year, Rwenzori was a hub of bloodbath after a joint operation between police and UPDF left hundreds of royal guards killed and tens of operatives taken down.

As a result, Rwenzururu King Charles Wesley Mumbere was arrested and has since been charged in Courts of law over various criminal cases including terrorism, murder, treason among others.

According to Chimpreports, on Tuesday, local leaders and security including the DISO Capt. Edmond Kamanyire, DPC Musa Tibakirana, Deputy RDC Rose Monday Byabasaija and District Chairperson Richard Rwabuhinga rushed in Katebwa and held urgent meetings with residents at Bunaiga C.O.U, Kyamukube trading center and Mabwe Mitandi.

DISO Edmond Kamanyire revealed that the leaders received information that the youth were regrouping in the mountains.

The DISO during the meeting called on the parents to talk to their children to surrender using government’s offered amnesty, before the UPDF takes serious action against them.

He assured the people that security is tight and warned that youth must ‘avoid playing games with the national army’ which has turned into a model army in Africa.

Musa Tibakirana the DPC disclosed that they were following lead on reports that the Kirumira Mutima group had established a camp of 70 people and in possession of five guns.

He urged the locals to talk to their children to surrender and handover the fire arms and other dangerous weapons to the LC3 chairperson and police after making a statement.

Kabarole district chairperson Richard Rwabuhinga reminded the people of the bloody Rwenzururu war between the Bakonzo and Batooro of 1967, noting that the past 50 years have been a journey of peace, healing, unity and the two tribes developing together.

Mr. Rwabuhina told the people that the youth were being deceived to follow leaders who wrongly demanded for Yira Republic which led to bloodbaths.
