The Electoral Commission (EC) is seeking salary increment of its staff after it emerged the commission is among the least paid government organisations.
TrumpetNews yesterday broke a story how EC top management earns peanuts compared to other government institutions.
For example, a casual worker at Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) earns more than a head of department at EC.
It is against this backdrop that the new chairman Simon Mugenyi Byabakama decried of low pay saying it leaves him a daring situation.
His predecessor Eng Badru Kiggundu raised same concerns until he retired government was yet to respond.
New salary structure
EC has proposed that the chairman’s salary should be increased from shs 8457300 gross to shs 32209200 inclusive of tax while his deputy Hajati Aisha Lubega should earn shs 30300000 from shs 8157300 gross monthly.
The five commissioners; Peter Emorut, Steven Tashobya, Nathaline Etomaru, Mustapha Ssebaggala Kigozi and Justin A. Mugabi will each take home shs 28758000 unlike previous monthly salary of shs 8007300.
EC wants its secretary Sam Rwakoojo bag shs 23033502 from shs 5m inclusive of tax.
From shs 4m, EC demands that the director of finance earn 19657960 while heads of departments like procurement, contracts committee, public relations should walk away with shs 17216000.
Shs 15440000 is proposed as new salary for principle officers who are paid shs 1930000 while senior officers should be getting shs 12464000 from shs 1298609.
Currently senior assistant election officer (1) takes shs 1159038 and senior assistant election officer (2) is paid shs 881626. Their new proposed salary is 10400000 and 10388872 respectively.
It remains unclear if Ministry of Public Service will approve EC’s proposal or will provide an alternative.
