Oil cash bonanza: Constitutional Court blocks Parliamentary inquiry

Court Order

The Constitutional Court of Uganda has today afternoon issued an interim order stopping MPs, any person or authority from inquiring or investigating the bonus payment of shs 6 billion to URA top bosses and other senior government officers. Constitutional Court is superintended by Deputy Chief Justice Stephen Kavuma.

“An interim order is hereby issued restraining parliament, any person or authority from investigating, questioning or inquiring into the impugned bonus payments and or staying any proceedings of whatever nature,” the Court order reads in part.

The order was prompted by an application filed by Eric Sabiiti, Electoral Commission (EC) counsel.

But the director of communications and public relations of  Parliament Chris Obore responded to this interim order saying there is no way or anyone can block or stop the August House from debating this motion because it is the Speaker who determines.

“Nobody will derail parliament from inquiring into the “handshake “. The Speaker is the boss of the House.

She is a lawyer of repute capable of making sound decisions. She will guide the MPs tomorrow. It’s the duty of parliament to do oversight on government and the matter is of public interest,” Obore said.

Court directed its registrar to ensure that the hearing of the main application is fixed in good time.
